Poll about what you collect

I pretty much collect in any means possible without completely overhauling my busy lifestyle: CRH, MD'ing, pocket change, garage sales, auctions, scan floors and ground, vending machines, privies, etc............Whatever is enjoyable:aside from time, gas and batteries, it's pretty much free.

I collect a little of everything. From silver halves to Civil War tokens and Hard Times tokens to large cents, two centers and trimes.Recently, since I haven't had much luck in the silver dept.hunting boxes of halves,i've been searching dimes. No silver yet but I have found several errors that are hard to spot because the coin is so small.I have found several die cracks and lamination errors, also a couple off center strikes.I don't have a large collection of any one thing in particular. My collections are small and widely varied. My favorite overall is Morgan Dollars, well besides gold coins which I can't afford. :).I pick up alot of my stuff from the local coin collectors show and sale that's held every month at a city park rec. center down the road.Sometimes Ebay, but not lately.

Thanks for voting everyone! I can see we have some serious collectors here. That's awesome! I don't collect everything like some of you do, but I love the hunt. My personal coin collection is less of a collection and more of an accumulation of random finds. A lot of times, I like learning about old coins even though I don't really want them. The stories behind stuff is what fascinates me. Old coins, relics, artifacts, junk, antiques, etc. Historical stuff. I guess silver is my favorite thing to collect, and halves seem to be the best way.

Happy Hunting!

I buy coins that I can't find while CRH'ing such as half dimes, large cents, Indian head, 2 cent and 3 cent pieces, "V" nickels, Standing Liberty quarters & my newest edition..a Flying Eagle cent......coins like that.

The only half dollar I bought was an 1877 Seated Liberty.

I am starting to really like the Morgan dollars too. I guess it is because they are so big. I have had my eye on a Trade dollar with chops marks & a Seated Liberty dollar, but they are pricey....phew!

I'm a specialist, I only collect meteorite related coins. Usually roman. Several Roman coins were made worshiping a 'fallen stone'.

ie. The reign of Elagabalius minted several coins showing the Stone of Emesa.

Unfortunately, I can't find a bank that will order me rolled roman coins. So no CRH on that.

LJ, the Flying Eagle Cent is one of my favorites. What an amazing coin! I also really like the Standing Liberty Quarters.

Meteoriete Hunter, I don't know much about meteorite coins, but they sound fascinating! I found this website. Is this what you collect? http://www.meteorman.org/Meteorite_Coin.htm

Be very careful with trade dollars,Draped Busts
and Seated Liberties. Many of them are counterfeit, even ones with chop marks.http://reviews.ebay.com/Fake-U-S-Trade-dollars_W0QQugidZ10000000000049445http://mywebpages.comcast.net/reidgold/draped_busts/chinese.htmlhttp://mywebpages.comcast.net/reidgold/draped_busts/page_7.htmlhttp://boards.collectors-society.com/showflat.php?Number=1654820http://www.coinworld.com/news/102102/news-3.asp

Thanks for the links Dig. I knew there were fakes out there, but not on this scale....that is just astonishing. My best bet would be to weigh them, because I am not experienced enough to just look at it and tell the difference.

Thanks again.

Apart from my CRH finds, I collect mostly US coins. I'm trying to complete the 20th century and have less than 200 dates to go. I also collect any foreign I find. Got a 2004 English penny at the casino today.

I collect a little of everything. Just finished my Buffalo set the other day, and one more to go on my wheats!

Other sets are very skimpy so far.

I also buy and sell old slabbed coins. :)

I only collect what I find EXCEPT, I did buy a Silver Eagle 1-oz coin but that's just because of the Walking Liberty design on it. I wonder what kind of a ring could be made out of one of those....hmmmmm

Every coin? WOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you kidding me? That's wild!

And I bet I know which wheatie you need. ;)

One of my favorite designs. Really, I think everyone loves it. And a ring made out of a SAE? hahaha. That'd be amazing! (and huge) :o Rings made of fine silver are quite rare.

No proofs or gold though, just circulation coinage. I'm mostly down to the big stuff, quarters, halves and dollars.

Need just two pennies: 1909-S-VDB and 1909-S Indian

Nickels (3): 1913-D & 1913-S Type 1 buffalos and 1912-S Liberty Head

Dimes (2): 1916-D Merc and 1901-S Barber

Quarters (59): Two Washingtons (1932 D&S), 20 Standings Libs., and 37 Barbers

Halves (72): 26 Walkers and 46 Barbers

Dollars (39): 15 Morgan and 24 Peace

177 total

That's incredible....that penny and that dime just hang over the heads of every coin collector. Good luck. fwiw, someone came into the coin shop recently to sell all of his coin roll hunting finds. He had been hunting since the early 80's, and he had an enormous stash. Among his finds was the holy grail: a 1909-s vdb. He found it back in the late 80's in a roll he got from a small farmers' bank. I wonder if there are any more out there. Earlier this year I found a 1909 regular vdb. But I have never heard of anyone finding a 1916-d merc. Again, good luck! That is an ambitious set!

The goal of my collection is a roll of each date/mintmark/intentional common variation (large date/small date, large mintmark/small mintmark, with rays/without rays, etc.) combination for all US and Canadian coins issued for circulation as well as enough to fill any books I decide to fill. The coins with too low of mintage, my goal would be 1. Theoretically, I would like 1 of each proof coin, but I am not pursuing that other than with what I find for now. I collect foreign coins, but for the most part only what I find (unless I get a great deal on something). This year I also started to dabble with currency with a goal of 1 of each year and Fed district for each denomination with a separate listing for star notes.

I also want to see how much of a collection I can get at face value or less. Other than CRH'ing, I recently started MD'ing (around April), and occasionally I will buy coins at coins shows or if I find a good deal (small collections at a good price). Though most of my coin show buys to date are just looking through the bargain bin and trying to find good deals.

I also decided I was going to see how much of a complete collection I could find with my metal detector with a goal of one of each date/mintmark for each US coin.

Until my hard drive crashed recently, I was doing a personal tracking list of my finds (essentially the same as the tracking list) to show how complete a collection I find (one for CRH and one for MD). Also keeping a separate tracking list for each year (starting in 2007). I will be recreating what I lost after I get DSL on Friday instead of doing it over dialup.

Note: I realize that almost all of the recent coins are worth only face value, but my theory in saving them is that it is a cash buffer of last resort. In other words, if I ever absolutely needed the money I can always cash them in as I should be able to get them all again.
