I guess I've been kinda poll happy lately. But this is something I have been wondering for a while. I NEVER tell any tellers that I'm buying the rolls to look through. When I ask for rolls, if a teller asks me what I need them for (which rarely happens anyway) I just tell them that my parents own a business and I'm picking up coins for them. I know they they won't turn me down if I told them I'm just going to search through the rolls, but what they don't know can't hurt me. So lets hear what my fellow forum members do...

I tell them my son collects coins and he likes to look thru them for intersting stuff such as foriegn coins, which is true, because all my foreign finds goes to him :)

I tell them that my grandkids have books so I get a bunch of halves for them to go through to get ones they don't have or replace the ones they do have with prettier ones. Makes me look like a sweetie pie. ;D

I have been to every bank in this town and asked for halves they don't order them and they don't have them, once in a while they will get a couple in change from someone, or a store has some in a deposit, but it is rare!

I tell them I build coin collections and sell them, Or I just say I sell the things on Ebay. and shake my head and say, yeah I guess a lot of people dont think you can get them from banks, but hey I will make the buck. They are happy to give em too me.
I also tell them we spend them, Witch is true, build coin collections, witch is also true.
They ask if I get silver, I say sometimes, but we sell them too. Most of the banks I deal with say they are happy to get them and give them to me so long as they dont see them back from me. if other people bring in what I have spent...thats the money flow.

I burn though at least a couple hundred dollars worth of halves a week.
Gas for a prius about $25 a week with all the driving for CHR Otherwise a tank of gas lasts me like 2 months LOL
Groceries, adds about $80 for the week.
baby things, diapers etc at another store about $50 a week
Lunches, about $35 a week.
Odd ball shopping and things, postage etc about $40 a week.

its a good Idea to get halves out there in your community as it keeps them from adding up in the fed. I find most clerks like them and buy them for them selves. If I can get 2 boxes a month absorbed locally this helps.
Also when people go to deposit them if the clerks dont buy them or give them as change. They end up filling a bag somewhere that may have a policy not to sell bags, some of them take years to add up, you never know when that $20 in halves you spend on gas or groceries is going to fill a bag, or maybe it will take a couple months to fill that bag, that may be loaded with silver. That will end up coming back too you in a fed box.
It ups the odds.

Yesterday I bought a used dryer from an appliance store for one of my renters and paid for it with Ike dollars the guy was so excited he gave me a discount and did not charge me tax. Said he was taking all of them home with him. He does not collect coins but he was excited to see these.

When they ask, I tell them the truth....as they need to know it. ;D I say I'm looking for a couple years that I don't have, like an '87. Sometimes they'll say they will keep an eye out for it. I don't usually mention silver, but I think most tellers know what you're doing. Some take the silver and put it aside for themselves anyway.

I sure do, so far I have had no problem.
I drop off some choclate gold foil covered coins once in a while.

Well they would for sure remember you that way! ;D

I drop off them chocolate coins every buy and every dump- keeps the tellers from all wanting to take break when I come through the door. When I buy I tell them I'm gonna toss them in wishing wells (cause I got big wishes) and when I dump I tell them I clean out wishing wells. HH Mark

Yep! I had a couple of tellers come right out and ask me "Are you a collector?" Of course I say yes. Then they tell me stories of others in the area that used to do the same thing but don't anymore. Then they ask what I'm looking for....... I usually tell them I look for error coins and keep the occasional old coin that I find in the boxes.

I am completely honest with all of my tellers when buying because they know I wont be bringing them back. It actually makes for good conversation because they always ask how the last week has been. As far as the dumps go... I tell them if they ask but if they don't ask, I don't tell.

So, I guess in at least one application, the "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy works? Lol

I've won lots of brownie points teaching tellers how to find silver dimes and quarters in Brink's rolls (the clear plastic wrap ones).

I explain to them how they can scan every roll that passes through their hands without actually opening them. With silver dimes averaging one every box or two, most tellers do find silver dimes and have found the occasional silver quarter.

They feel I've given something back to them (without actually giving something back to them).

when i first tried to get half rolls the teller told me she didnt have any then i told her my son was having a birthday party and we needed halves for one of the games and then she said that she could give me 310 dollars worth geee she sure didnt have any half rolls did she i think they know what is going on

I think he is talking about the Wicked Witch of the North. Which is quite a witch much nastier than the witch of the east.

LOL We love you Dave
