They tried with Google Wallet and failed. Many companies have tried to offer alternatives and have failed. If Google can't slay the PayPal beast, it is going to be very hard to do.

I have a feeling the "slide" was also due to no longer allow PayPal use on any sites that sell firearm related products. That little "stance" caused PayPal to lose millions. On the good side - it was a boom for normal credit card use.

Square is one alternative not sure how the fees compare but it's supposed to be very user friendly.
