Very small and made of brass. Eagle with shield and 13 stars above eagle. Found in church yard that was built in 1821. Any help/ideas/leads to what this may be would be awesome

Not civil war, that kind of eagle was first used in 1902 and is still in use today. The eagle/design is known as, "The Great Seal"

It looks like part of a buckle.

Awesome find! I would be thrilled to dig it.

I also think it could be something that went on a strap of some sort. Maybe a riffle sling?

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking some sort of clasp to a leather bracelet maybe?

might be for the leather strap on a officer's cap

I think a patriotic or sweetheart type of item, like a bracelet, is more likely than from a military item due to a few minor details of the design; stars arranged incorrectly, stars not enclosed by a cloud, banner is missing from eagles mouth.
