SOLVED-Possible CS Picket Pin???

I dug this blacksmith made solid 1 in. square iron spike in a 1862 Morgan CSA Cavalry camp this morning. I have dug a lot of iron spikes but never one this long. We do know Morgan had blacksmiths traveling with him as soldiers as they shod the many cavalry horses. This was in the main camp near the tent lines. I wonder if it was used as a makeshift picket pin??/ Notice the curled lip on the right end. HH, Quindy.

I dont think so Quindy, reason being, there is no ring as a means of attachment or ability to swivel. Its curled end is obvious evidence of it being pounded into hard ground....possibly a Sibley Tent stake?

Hey there Mr.Vol1266, love watching your videos of all your finds you got going on in "Todays Finds" sweet stuff... Here is two examples of a Union and Confederate picket pin.. Most picket pins had a ball top on a straight shank that flows into a 5 long swelled shank at the bottom of the pin. I'm not going to say if it is or wasn't a picket pin, either way kewl find and hope to enjoy more of your videos down south!

Quindy .. I am curious .. are you in an farm area where pit silage was stored and covered with tarps? Reason I ask, is that at DIV, I dug about a dozen that look just like yours, which were used as tarp anchors.

Rob, the camp is on a dairy farm from the 1960s and they did feed silage in a pit. The camp was a good quarter mile from the pit but you may have figured it out. Thanks, Q.
