All, found this near a farm house built in the 1840s and lived in ever since. It is non-magnetic, hollow, crushed, and believed to be brass. When dug, I thought it could be a gas tank float, because it has a seam all the way around. However, after searching on-line, all I've seen have a valley(?) where the sending unit arm would attach. So I'm not sure about that ID. Another possibility is a hand warmer, but there aren't any holes, like those I've seen on-line. Any guesses as to ID and age would be appreciated.

It could have been a float for a water trough.

Sure looks like a float to me too.

All, sounds good. Watering trough float seems more reasonable than a gas tank float, given it was a chicken & egg farm up until about 20 years ago.

I believe it's too small for a watering trough float. I'm going with fuel tank!
