This wasn't too deep (3-4 inches) but was near an old tree near a road on an old farm with a modern home. Could it be a hair clip (although no catch is visible). Wondered about age timeline too. Any other thoughts? Thanks!

Pretty piece of brass and my favorite heart design too. I would say a barrette for sure but, missing the attaching parts. Cute as a button.
