Hi all, I recently posted some finds from a site a friend and I found a couple weeks ago. Possible fort/homesite, that gave up many old coins and buttons.

The coins ranged from atleast 1773-1840. I also found this piece, it has been laying on my counter since then because it seemed I had seen something similar before.

Could it possibly be a piece of the brass side plate from a flintlock or Caplock pistol? Not sure what else it could be given the design.

Could it possibly be part of a window latch?

looks to be made of clay?
No, it is made of brass. It was the only item like this found at this site. There was literally no modern trash there, everything dug was of time period.

Like I said probably a shot in the dark, we find so many "whatsits".

Possibly a trunk or box latch of some sort. It does seem like it would have been inletted in wood, it looks like it may have had some fancy on fhe upper edge.

Definitely not a side plate, the shape is all wrong. Looks "mechanical" in nature, not decorative.
