Can anyone identify this odd button found in the vicinity of Putnam Memorial Park, A revolutionary War campground. It could be from the inauguration of the park 100 years after the campground was in use. It looks to me like it was some kind of lapel pin that hung in a button hole. halfdie.webphalfdie1.webp

Material appears to be some kind of bronze, .5 inch in diameter.

I believe what you have there is the side button for a visor cap, with the backing still attached (originally sewn into the hat). These hold on the chin strap, and would have originally screwed on to the post, which it has now become attached to. But as of yet I can't place the who/when.
Oh, and Welcome to TreasureNet!

If you look at some of those antique cufflinks, there are some designed like your find, not with the eagle of course. The eagle definitely looks military. Maybe some general officers cufflink.

Thank you for your welcome, I'm glad I found you, that button has driven me nuts for years. I think you nailed it. If it helps on the who/when. If is contemporary with the encampment it would be 1778. My house is midway between the Putnam Park encampment and Colonel Parson's encampment (recently discovered). Putnam park housed Enoch Poor's New Hampshire Regiment, Hazen's Canadian Regiment, and Huntington's, Second Connecticut regulars. Colonel Parson's was the First Connecticut regulars.

That might help identify the eagle with shield. I'm happy to call this solved as far as its function goes, like I said, I think you nailed it, but I would love to know more if you find anymore.
