I spotted a lone dime today in a coinstar...it stood out visually...I thought at first it was originally a mint coin...I can usually tell between older silver dimes 1964 and earlier to the non silver dimes but this one is a 2002 S mint... the band doesn't have the typical coloring that newer dimes have... wondering if it's silver...

It could be a silver proof. Looks pretty beat up if that's what it is though.

I got a quarter from the coin star a few months back and it too did not have the clad band around it.

There were no regular dimes minted in 2002 with the S mint mark, except the silver proofs, I don't think you could buy one by itself, they only came with a "silver" set, so that coin was taken from a silver set and ended up in circulation.

I'm guessing it was stolen along with other collectable coins in someone's collection and all the coins either spend at face value or sold by the thief.

Yep definitely the silver proof from a set. And it’s been in circulation for a bit. Once I saw a young kid at the grocery store in line in front of me pay for chips, candy and sodas with a bag full of Morgan silver dollars.. 13 of them. The cashier pulled cash out of his wallet and shoved it in the til and pocketed the silver

Some people have been known to break up their proof sets. Stolen sets get broken up fairly often.
