[Evolution]

I found this piece at an old homesite that dates back into the late 1700's. Strangely enough, my friend Steve found a virtually identical piece the following week at the same site.

This is the piece my friend found. Looks to be almost identical.

It's one half of a late 19th or early 20th century lady's two-piece dress buckle. The other half (evidently found by your friend) would be a mirror image of it. Combined, the two would look like this:
