Pre civil war RailRoad beds

I was wondering if any one has detected with any luck to the sides of old RR beds in particular pre civil war Rail Roads. From what I have been able to find at least in our area seems as if the workers lived in tents close to their work. I doubt the workers had a lot of loose change but possibly camp gear and such.
