Pre Civil War US baby plate with soldiers initials carved in back, scarcer lettering

Got out today to a new permission. not a ton of finds but a couple quality ones. a nice Pre Civil War US baby plate with soldiers initials carved in back, a KG II copper and a few other finds. Stoked to have dug my 2nd baby plate. this one has thinner lettering than my 1st one.

Not just good enough...that is great! And the soldiers initials to boot...I'm new to alot of the terminology....why are these called baby plates?

They mainly come in 2 sizes. The larger ones are more common. Gary

Pretty sure all the pre Civil War plates were smaller in the 1830's-40's. Then towards the war they increased in size
