Privy Digging

Do any of you have any suggestions on Privy digging (out house)?
I have never done it but I know of some land that's getting ready to be developed and I know where one is.
And this one has a oval metal pipe sticking out of the ground where the seat attaches. Do I just start digging?
How deep do I need to go?
