Found this little piece of driftwood on the beach the other day. It's giving me a +3 vdi number, which usually means it's probably not iron. But I can not see anything metal and I noticed it smells a little like gas. It makes my garret pointer go crazy. Should I cut it open and see what's metal. I checked it under a jewelers loupe and can't find anything either. Found in New Jersey.

Kind of looks like it was a sawed board at one time, might be part of a boat with a small broken off copper or bronze nail hidden in it. My curiosity would get the best of me and I'd probably have to dig into it to see what it was. if I'd found it.

hopefully you get a copper nail out of the deal. Splinters are the reason I avoid drift wood.

Turn the sensitivity down on the pin pointer so you can zero in on the area that sets it off.

Three nails. I guess they are copper. They look copper colored under the loupe. The petroleum smell really came out when I split the wood. But my wife and dad just confirmed they are seeing gold flakes all over the table where I split up the driftwood. I'm sure it's just the power if wishful thinking.
