After over $250 and a heap of rings I figure I've all but hunted out my regular spot not far from my place and quite frankly whilst its nice to get some cash back from my hobby I figured it was time to find a new spot to find some older coins. So rather than head East to the newer suburbs I headed West to the older ones.
On Thursday night I had finished cooking dinner and doing the dishes (yeah yeah so I'm whipped) I had about an hour of daylight left so I headed out to some ovals about five minutes away from my place. Problem was they were full of football teams but as it turned out they were all leaving. In the end I only had 45 minutes and the only worthwhile thing I found was a Hamilton Standard badge. I had never heard of them but have since found that they are a US aeronautical company.
Friday night I headed out to a different place for two hours also not far from my place where they play cricket. I found a few modern coins ($2.05) and then had my surprise for the day - a 1960 Shilling and a 1983 US one cent (still shiney new
go figure). The Shilling was not in the best condition but at least I found an area old enough to get pre-decimal coins from.
Saturday afternoon I figured that a lot of the ovals would still be full of sporting teams so I thought I'd try a different area which I've had my eye on for some time. Big area, not a lot of rubbish, in an old part of town - jackpot. My first coin from this area was a 1911 Penny quickly followed by a 1942 one. The soil can't be very acidic as both were in great condition. Unfortunately a big storm was rolling in with heaps of thunder and lightning so I called it quits. I went out again today for a few hours and continued to grid this new area (which is going to take me months) and found a 1958 sixpence which popped out of the ground still looking as shiney as it did when dropped. Another surprise was another US one cent coin from 1975 - you guys get around.
This site has huge potential and will no doubt keep me busy for a month or two.
