Hired a diver several yrs ago to recover lost wheel off towboat ( propeller ) This guy showed up with a metal detector and coil on sled with about 100 ft cable and small boat . We launched at intercoastal city la and made short trip east . Lowered coil/sled and proceded to go back and forth across channel..about 2 mph . I expressed my doubts but he told me this works !!!!! all of a sudden ...boat stopped, metal detector , diver , cable, boat seat, all went out back of boat !!!! diver came up...and put on gear to go try to recover equipment . Came up shortly and yelled...you ain`t gonna believe this ...Looks like a wheel off a ship !!!!! Come to find out it was standing upright ..stuck in mud ..and standing about six ft tall . Wheel was 8 ft diameter and about 4 tons weight. I had tried to tell him size but it did not register till this moment !! We were able to recover it with crane barge . He called all his buddies to come look what he had found with detector. I guess this could be classed with a relic . :)

need to recheck them old swimming hole with that, :o

I guess I was not clear...coil on sled is ok...what jumped out at me was the idea of using this to find a four ton ..8 ft dia wheel that was in all probably still sitting on surface . Was proved right when sled snagged wheel and pulled diver and all equipment over back of boat . I think the diver was looking for something ..like off an outboard or such . thats why I told him that this will cause a problem . the reason wheel came off...It had not properly tightened..welds broke..nut backed off when pilot went to reverse . I was on boat for a few days was on stern when it came loose, and looked to see where we were . Normally when this happens you lose wheel. It is rare to recover one .

I had to locate a weedcutter's paddle wheel over a drop off on a fresh water lake. I found it easy enough but when I told them what it might cost to recover it, they paid me and that's the last I heard from them. A friend says the paddle wheel is still down there in sixty feet of water. I used to get calls to find those stainless steel racing props but with all the junk in the muck, it takes forever to hunt a lake bottom. "It's about over here," is what I'm told.........
