Useful mapping tools
MyTopo Free Online Topo Maps
http://historicalmaps.arcgis.com/usgs/
The first site lets you, for free, view joined Quad Maps. It also lets you switch between Quads, road mapping and current satellite photography. The down side is you can only look but for money you can buy prints. Still it is very useful tool.
The second site lets you navigate to the area you are interested in. Once there left click and a time line pops up at the bottom of the page listing the historic Quad maps that are available. Be sure to scroll through all of the time line as the late 1800's mapping can be hidden. Pick the map you want and it will overlay it to the current mapping for you to compare. One good thing about this site is you are able to download any historic quads for free. The 1900 and newer quad maps show existing houses, churchs, schools, roads and sectional information.
If I have wasted your time because everyone already knew about these two sites I can claim ignorance being new to Treasure Net.
