Well we had big storms this past weekend and totally rearranged my creek in a good way :laughing7: been racking up on pottery shards of all kinds and even a spokeshave and I'll post that tomorrow...but my question is about this little piece...what are your thoughts on it?

I decided to go ahead and add the pic of the spokeshave and a couple other quartz items I found too. The shave part of the spokeshave fits a pen perfect and has a sharp edge to it...at first I just brought it up because it looked different but after googling tools I found one almost just like it.

Could be a worn down point or an almost finished point. Could also be a hafted knife.

I'll have to google the hafted knife...I'm a dummy when it comes to these quartz things and betting I'm missing stuff in the creek that's real cool because I'm a shard collector.

Very nice you got some good ones. I remember when you first posted some finds a few months ago. What a great improvement! Now what are you calling the piece to the far left of the spokeshave? The first one looks nice. But seeing it is flat on one side it is probably unfinished.

I don't know what it is...it's flat and the edges look worked but it's been rolled around so much in the creek...might be a really worn scrapper but thinking it's something because of the uniformity...the center one I'm not sure but might be a drill/scrapper for the pottery lol

rock...I've been doing a lot of research trying to put a timeframe to my stuff, went to the local museum and their stuff is from the Joara (Berry site) and the only difference in the pottery from there is it has circles on them and so far I haven't found any with circles. The potshards I've found lately look like they were paddle stamped but not a carved paddle. And the Berry site is across the county from me so I have determined my artifacts were done between late archaic and early woodland and were probably Catawba indians. Now if I could just stumble on a "real" point that would make my day. The nice thing about the shards is I know exactly what they are and absolutely love them! I can't say enough about how exciting it is to find these things but I know we all share that feeling...it's a wonderful thing!

Well I gotta run for the nite...got workie tomorrow lol

I would ask if you could turn it up 1/4 so the flat side is down and the round side is up then a pic of both sides and a pic of the flat side of it.....the piece on the bottom not the others. It might be a point but I cant tell for sure with that pic. While you are at it post a pic of the shards. Do the shards have any markings on them or are they just plain?

Here is one of the shards ...it's about 2" long and the first dark one I've found...I'll have to post the other ones tomorrow. It's not a great pic but it's the first one I found with the lines and have found several since with lines but light in color.

Just remembered I did take a pic of a couple I found on the 5th and adding them now.

Those are nice pieces. Maybe tomorrow I can show you some I found last week. I wont post unless you say its ok.

Cord and fabric wrapped impressions tell us a lot about the weaving styles. I think the knife is worn down from use and creek tumble. You have a good area to hunt with much info to be learned. Good luck.

I have found a total of 17 pieces of pottery so far in the field I am hunting. The biggest piece is the best looking one. I have some plain and some with print. I am really enjoying the shards cause I have only found 1 piece in 5 yrs of hunting till the past couple of weeks. I usually give it to my brother but I am thinking of making a frame with it so I guess I will keep it this time. Hope you like it, rock

Those are sweet! I love them...do you know what group of people made them? I was in the creek again this afternoon and found my biggest shard yet! I also found two small dark ones and something that looks kinda like flint that was unusual to me so I kept it.

All 3 of your finds are great. The flint piece is probably a Awl which is a nice tool. I have found them here also. So how much pottery have you found altogether?

Oh I believe the Creek Indians made most of it. 550 B.P.

I'm not sure how many pieces I have but I keep the rounded pieces that might have been handles or feet in a basket and there's quite a bit...the "good" ones I have about 20 of...I've got to get a display case for them. Also, today I found 3 more of those points with the rounded bottoms. I'll have to put them all together so you can see and maybe give me more info on. I gotta run for the evening and prolly won't get to check the creek tomorrow. btw your pottery shards will make a beautiful frame...they are much more decorative then what I'm finding but I'm hoping to find some pretty like yours.

Yeah I like the orange pieces its a different color than the normal ones. I find black and brown usually. I look forward to seeing your other finds. I wonder if you could post the round pottery pieces you have found? I dont know if you know it but they did make pottery game pieces from broken pots. They are called pottery discs. Never know you might have some. Ill check back tomorrow, have a good night.
