I got a prospective hunting place that has a crapload of bottles and crockery in it. Some bottles are still intact while naturally other are broken. The question I have is when did the bottles start coming out with screw caps? The one the guy let me take this morning has no company markings telling me what it is. The only thing I see on it is on one side it says "HALFPINT" and the other side has "FEDERAL LAW FORBIDS SALE OR REUSE OF THIS BOTTLE".

Any ideas on how old this could be? It looks like it might be a whiskey bottle and has a diamond pattern on it but nothing tells me what it is. Also on the bottom of the bottle is "96-8", "R571", "3" and the letter "M" in a keystone (like Pennsylvania state symbol).

Thanks,

Funkman

after washing the dirt off it I noticed that it has the mold seam down the sides. Does this help dating it? I assume mold seams means more recent but not sure.

Thanks,

Funkman

Federal Law Forbids...was on bottles from 1935 to 1964

seams usually run all the way through the lip, top are post 1900,s. they still made a few that the seam stopped mid neck after the 1900's tho. lumber camp is right. also there actually were a few old screw caps around. ill try to look op the company that made the bottle when i get home if i can remember

Funk,

M in a hexagon.........Metro Glass Bottle Company, Jersey City, NJ. Mark used c.1949-c.1981. Also with plants at Washington, PA (since 1957); Carteret, NJ (1958) and Dolton, IL. Known as the Metro Glass Division of National Dairy Products Corp. after 1956 (Kraftco after 1969). Later known as MetroPak Containers. MetroPak was bought by Ball Corporation in 1980. The Jersey City plant was closed on Nov. 13, 1981, but the other three plants continued in operation. I'm unsure of the exact chain of later events on this company. If you know, email me!
