Question about using treasure maps?

If you do use an old one would the compass directions matter? I read some old maps have north pointing east or south. Would that affect your reading of directions?

Hard to say. For someone smart enough to have treasure but dumb enough to hide it and then leave a map to it, it could go either way.

If they used a compass to create the map then using a compass to follow it would make sense.

Haha, Kind of odd, eh ? Someone goes to great lengths to "hide" something, eh ? Presumably "hidden" so that others (doh) don't FIND it. But then sure, what does he do next ? Makes a treasure map. And riddles the site with marker clues. Eh ? So that his "hidden" treasure can remain "hidden" from possible TH'rs. Of course
