I went to two banks today who said they don't carry halves in rolls, and the one that has a coin counter says the counters "check" the coins in part by their weight so silver is either rejected or jams the machine and they just give the coin(s) back to their customers. Both said that if I wanted, they could "order" me a quantity of halves from the Federal Reserve bank; I declined, because I didn't want rolls of new halves. So...

(1) Should I let them "order" me rolls if they don't have any onsite?
(2) Where else can I get rolls of halves with a better chance of getting silver?
(3) Is it worth it to try dime and quarter rolls?

Thanks to any who reply.

I just started doing coin rolls. But I have worked on a lot of banks (air conditioning) and, loomis or brinks roll all of the local bank coins and it is done by machines that measure the diameter not the weight. just my observations

Some coin counters do indeed reject silver.

1. The coins will actually come from a coin courier such as Brinks or Loomis. They likely will be a mix of circulated coins and not all new coins...especially halves.

2. No better place than a bank that I know of.

3. Maybe. Only one way to find out.

Some counters reject silver by weight but if you got a BU dime it will keep it. I tried it as a test it kept mine. Dimes havent been producing much in my area. As for the others the only way to know is to try. Is the coin stars free or do you have to pay to dump??

All CoinStars around here take a small percentage, usually 6% or 9%. The banks' counters are free to account holders but take a percentage from nonmembers.

I just opened a small basic checking at the one bank that had halves on demand for me yesterday (didn't find anything) so that I could cycle through coins there. I will also be depositing my MD clad finds there so it was a twofer for me.

I've ordered a box of halves a couple of times from my bank..50 rolls 500 bucks. Found three 64's six 40% and one 1942 Walker out of 2,000 coins.. :)
Good Luck

Man those are good #s for 4 boxes

just keep stacking, just keep stacking, stacking stacking stacking

2000 coins would be two boxes

Ahh yep for some reason I was thinking $2k- even better #'s for 2boxes

I have personally found silver in machine wrapped rolls, so you should not have a problem. :icon_thumright:
