Hi, please don't be annoyed by all my post, I'm just bored. Well here is a coin to mull over. It is a !792 Spanish coin except I'm not sure if it's real or not.

Pros- It is an exact design of the coin it's supposed to be/It was found in an old area/ it has the high marking that a struck coin would have/ rim agrees with striking/ does Not have "replica" on it

Cons- It is or the wrong medal (dunno metal) It was only found 4" deep/ from Mexico (found in Michigan)

Here's a theory that I postulated:

It was struck after the American Revolution due to a shortage of coins, traveled up The Mississippi for fur trade with Indians/ French, then was cast away because it was a token and not made of any medal valuable.

Counterfeiting is not a new crime. Was the original value high enough to justify striking counterfeits out of fake metal?

I have one of those.....in brass which I found in an old house. It was not dug. Somebody ground the date off of mine a long time ago though. Mine also seems to be an electrotype counterfeit. I always imagined it to be play pirate money.

I did find it by a fairly new area. a few scratches on there show it to by gold-ish, but gold doesn't corrode. The original coin was made out of gold. possibly it was an early counterfeit for that time period. There is only one other instance of what I know where someone found a coin similar to mine. I don't think it's a mass counterfeiting operation, because if so there would be hundreds of web site telling me how the where cheated. So play Money and mass counterfeiting are out. The only option I can think of that's left is that it was some type of merchant's token that was not gold, or gold plated, so the person could exchange it for real money at a later date.

here's a better picture

copy and paste the above URL

Wow! Thanks everyone! The spanish funny money story is very plausible for my coin since it doesn't say COPY on it.

Also, the URL is has the exact image of my coin on it

al kinds of money [countries] were legal tender in the U.S. after we started to mint our own. don't remember what year the law was changed passed. I was surprised at the date.
