Equinox 600. Garrett ProPointer.
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Before you start it suggests you do a noise cancel, if there is excessive ground noise you should ground balance.

Thank you!

There is a good quick start walkthrough in the instruction manual. You should download it.
Here is the text excerpt:

From the manual:

"1. Turn On Press the Power button on the side of the control panel.

2. Select a Detect Mode Select the optimum Detect Mode Search Profile for your detecting location. (EQUINOX 800 shown). See 'Detect Modes' on page 22 for more information on how to choose the most suitable Detect Mode.

3. Noise Cancel Select Noise Cancel from the Settings Menu, then press to initiate an Auto Noise Cancel. This will take approximately 8 seconds to complete.

4. Begin Detecting! Press to return to the Detect Screen, and begin detecting!

Note: If excessive ground noise is heard after performing the Quick Start steps, carry out the Ground Balance procedure (page 40). If excessive noise is still being experienced try adjusting the Sensitivity to a lower level to reduce noise."

Note that GB and Noise cancel is mode specific so if you change modes on the fly it is best if you do a noise cancel again because you are using a different Multi IQ spectrum and GB, if necessary.

One the best, most thorough detector manuals I have seen. Wish they provided a hard copy, but is massive and reads well in PDF format.

Going to give folks a few weeks before folks start getting the "RTM" treatment. 95% of questiolns should be answered by it.

How was your beach trip with the EQ600?

It went great, I followed your guys suggestions and it did quite well. Did not have any issues with chatter or iron discrimination. I knew what I would be digging before I dug it. I didn't find anything post worthy, just a couple pulltabs and $0.83 in clad. Great machine and plan on hitting some older sites soon!

What mode(s) were you using and where you on dry sand and wet sand?

I was using the EQ600. I was hunting the wet sand, I wanted too see how it could do, because I bought it just for its ability in wet sand. I can easily say, it lives up too Terry's praise.

Beach mode.

This is like pulling teeth. Lol.

Sorry about the 20 questions but with a new detector people are looking to get as much operational data from users as they can so precise reports of targets recovered, depth, ability to screen trash targets, site conditions, detector setup (modes and any tweaked settings), and other performance data (target ID accuracy, chatter, EMI) etc help your fellow detectorists figure out what works and what doesn't.

So, which beach mode? There are 2 different Beach modes. Beach 1 is primarily for dry/damp salt sand and Beach 2 is for wet sand/surf. They have diffrent settings and performance characteristics. Thanks.

Sorry Ferrari, I didn’t quite understand your question. I used Mode 1 for the most part. As for depth, most of the pull tabs were about 4” down and the clad was around 6”, nothing too deep. Mode 2 gave a bit of chatter, don’t know why. I didn’t hunt in the surf though.

Great. Thanks. Good info. Surprised Mode 2 was more chatter. That's unexpected and interesting.

Glad you got something. The Chesapeake Bay beaches were remarkable yesterday. The wind had pushed the water out about 40' past the low tide mark. Driftwood and trash everywhere. I detected the wet sand and found some clad and a glass 100 year old bottle. The guys with the wetsuits cleaned it out at the end of the season last year. It was like walking on water. Sort of. Always wanted to see what the bottom looked like. Tons of half sheared off glass bottles to get mangled on. Ick.

I was too Ferrari. I'm going back tomorrow to a different part of the beach, I will keep you guys posted. I'm going to try using Mode 2 a bit more and see if there is still chatter.

I went to a different part of the same beach tonight. I only found a pull tab and $0.06. The cool thing was, is that the nickel ( modern) was 9 inches down, in wet sand. That’s pretty impressive. The signal I got for it was clear and chirpy.
