Found what seems to be some kind of plate. It measures about 2 x 3 inches and I can read "WILLS blank AND COMPANY on the top and SOUTH DAKOTA on the bottom. Looks 19th century to me. Found in the backyard of a 1710 homestead in southern Massachusetts. Any help would be great thank you.

Wells Fargo. There are lots of reproductions if you Google Wells Fargo buckle. They sell for $10 and up. Yours has the look of an original, but not sure how old. Maybe the buckle experts can weigh in.

I just looked a a closeup of the back of your buckle again and it doesn't look as old as I thought, but I will leave it to the experts.
