Is this a railroad tag/marker?

It probably is because I found this little blurb: chroniclingamerica.loc.gov › ... › September 23, 1915

23 Sept. 1915. Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers. Lib. of Congress. <http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn88064054/1915-09-23/ed-2/seq-1/> ..... 'in - i usa A. E. Hudson, chief car inspector r of of the G. S. L. Co., on the north side, ...

Neat find

Thanks, you must've dug deep for that one. Didn't know cause bougalousa is a paper mill town and gsl co might be a lumber company and the tag could be a lumber tract of land

Oh, okay . . wonder what was up with the link I found. Do you think there was a Chief Car Inspector for lumber? Could the lumber have been hauled away by train?

They probably had their own rail spurs with inspections there but they also started the great northern RR.

The Great Southern Lumber Company also expanded into other enterprises, including the establishment in 1905 of the New Orleans Great Northern Railroad to transport their products, the Bogalusa Paper Company in 1918-1937, Bogalusa Turpentine Company, Bogalusa Tung Oil, Inc. and the Bogalusa Stores, their commissary.

I wasn't able to decide if it was for the lumber co operations - like a tool tag or for the railroad aspect of it. They did have their own cars - this is from 1922:

Shay Geared Steam Locomotive Advertisements

The locomotive pictured is the Great Southern Lumber Co. #204 - s/n 1684
