Looks to be a 1662-1722 Q'ing Dynesty Chinese Cash Coin minted under the reign of Emperor Sheng Tsu. These coins were in circulation for centuries and I see you found it in California, where there were many Chinese immigrant miners, most likely dropped by one of them in the mid to late 1800's. Nice potentially 1600's coin.
They are very interesting coins, I have a small horde of cash coins, a lot of them date back to around 900-1000 ad.
Those coins were also used for decorations along with beads on Chinese sewing baskets, I remember my mother, aunt and grandmother, all three had the
sewing basket with coins and beads. Here's a picture of one something like my mothers, I remember hers had more beads. I was born in '37, so they
were common before that time.
