Got out for a full days detecting with a couple buds and almost walked away feeling disappointed. I was pulling targets but one of the guys I was detection with had found a Spanish cob and the other a couple decent coppers. I had only found some lead and plain buttons and the usual bits and bobs. Near the end if the day my detecting partner called me over to look at a button that he thought was military. He handed me a tombac button with a crude Tudor Rose engraved. It was a great looking button but I told him that I didn't think it was military. Less than 2 minute later I pull out the brass Tudor Rose button and called him over to show him what the military should look like. I was pleased because it was the end of the day and time to pack up.

I'm 95% sure that it is a Royal Navy Lieutenant's button as I've done considerable research of these buttons. I do have a pewter version that I dug a couple years ago that was confirmed. I've also found three Rev War Royal Navy buttons on this site so this one would make sense.

Tim Burt from Hamwic House confirmed that it is a Royal Navy Lieutenant's undress (working) uniform button. Happy with that!

Well done! Awesome button!

Congrats Romeo, Great stuff! I like that old large pocketknife! Probably an early Barlowe? They had switchblades in the CW too, you know. If you got down and left behind a concealed knife that you could draw quickly could save you from the "Corpse Rats". That might give you the break that let you crawl away in the darkness!

Very nice finds! :occasion14:

Nice pre-Revolution Royal Navy button! Awesome! Nice condition, too.

Killer find! I found a pewter 7th regiment and it looks the same, except mine has lettering. Yours is pretty!!! Congrats!

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

I get excited finding just one round ball Patrick, I'd probably have a heart attack if I found four in one hunt. :laughing7:

Just got confirmation from Tim Burt of Hamwic House...he literally wrote the book on early Royal Navy buttons...it is a Royal Navy tudor rose Lt. working uniform button. I was confident of that but nice to have that confirmed.

Thanks man...your encouragement in my last post put me in the right frame of mind!

Was hoping for some remaining gilt but not a glimmer.
