Got out for a full days detecting with a couple buds and almost walked away feeling disappointed. I was pulling targets but one of the guys I was detection with had found a Spanish cob and the other a couple decent coppers. I had only found some lead and plain buttons and the usual bits and bobs. Near the end if the day my detecting partner called me over to look at a button that he thought was military. He handed me a tombac button with a crude Tudor Rose engraved. It was a great looking button but I told him that I didn't think it was military. Less than 2 minute later I pull out the brass Tudor Rose button and called him over to show him what the military should look like. I was pleased because it was the end of the day and time to pack up.
I'm 95% sure that it is a Royal Navy Lieutenant's button as I've done considerable research of these buttons. I do have a pewter version that I dug a couple years ago that was confirmed. I've also found three Rev War Royal Navy buttons on this site so this one would make sense.
Tim Burt from Hamwic House confirmed that it is a Royal Navy Lieutenant's undress (working) uniform button. Happy with that!
