Never saw anything like this before.
Personally on this one, I wouldn't, I don't think it will help/react well.I would soak an edge of it in lemon juice. There's a reasonable chance there's not a bad looking plate under there and you just have to remove the crust. You can send it to someone, but they'd almost certainly do the same thing.
