Rare silver coin!

Cleaning up yesterday's finds from a spot that had navy housing during WWII. My wife found a 1943 silver war nickel minted in Philadelphia. I found a 1908 Indian head penny (I thought it was 1903 until taking this picture), a sterling silver locket marked 'Hubert' on the back and a rare 1944 silver 10 centavos minted in Denver!

Cool find for this side of the Pacific. It was made in 1944 for the liberation of the Philippines. The production of those coins ceased in 1942 with the Japanese invasion, then started back up again in 1944 when we liberated the islands.

Thanks coinman123! The spot we were hunting has WWII navy relics so that makes a lot of sense. The mint in Manila stopped producing coins when the Japanese invaded in 1941. In 1944 when the U.S. liberated it they brought crates of coins to restart the economy. So if you find a 1944 or 1945 it was made in a U.S. mint. This 1944, 10 cent piece was made in Denver. It makes sense that a navy man would come home with one in his pocket but it still knocked me over in surprise!

I know how u feel, C. Got my first war nickel in, oh, 1981 or 82. Then NONE! Until a few weeks ago. After all those years...I pulled FIVE from one of my honey holes in a week. Coulda knocked me over with a feather. 😮

Wow that was quite a stretch between war nickles Ogre1190! Me and the wife have dug 11 of them at that site since January! I know a lot of good diggers who have never found one. You just never know what is in the ground!
