RE: iron plate - Solved- (a name plate of some sort application unknown)

It measures 12 inches long by 4 inches wide, 6 screw or nail holes, and is very heavy , with some sort of stenciling on it that I can't quite make out. I have tried to clean it the best I can, but am afraid of loosing what's left of the stenciling. Any thoughts?

Re: Does anybody know what this iron plate might be?

All I can make out is Kansas City, Mo. at the bottom. Can anyone add to this? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller--Bueller?

Yep, it says "St." right above "MO."..........it must be an address tag of some sort. Maybe a little more careful cleaning would reveal more??
Do you actually see 'Kansas' before 'City?' I couldn't make that out and there are other ?? Cities. i.e. Platte City, Jefferson City, Montgomery City, Wright City and many more.

How about Sarsaparilla; as in Kansas City Sarsaparilla or Umbrella. It appears the last 5 letters on the top left are rella or rilla. Interesting find, Breezie

The top line (above City) looks like 'REILA??' to me. It needs a little more cleaning for a better view, or, maybe, blacklight, or, CSI folks!

REILA is what it first looked like to me too, but there is not a common word in the English dictionary that ends in REILA, plus the I in CITY has a cap at the top and bottom, and that letter does not. It could be a M with the middle part missing. I tried to get sarsaparilla out of it, but that is a definate E. The 2nd line is probably the address with RD. being ROAD. Breezie

REILA is what it first looked like to me too, but there is not a common word in the English dictionary that ends in REILA, which is why I thought umbRELLA. I tried to get sarsaparilla out of it, but that is a definate E, so I'm still going with umbrella. Of course the REILA could be the ending of someone's name. :dontknow: Breezie

I will try cleaning it a little more tomorrow, and photograph it in the sunlight. Maybe it will give up a few more clues. Thanks all for your input so far!

The word on the top line maybe "Stencils" or "Pencils"?

Re: Does anybody know what this iron plate might be?

I'll take a guess and say it could be an address plate someone fastened to a fence, mailbox or place out front of their house, like you see in rural communities. First line could be a persons name, second line street address and last line city and state.
Being stenciled, the people might have taken it with them as a momento. Do you know the property owners or where they came from? Could match up.

After a bit more cleaning, and holding it at just the right angle in the light coming through the window this morning, I think I can see what it says. Hard to capture with the camera though, but this is the best I can do.

Since you've got that much information, Bramble ought to be able to knock it out before the pot gets hot! :headbang: Breezie

I took a quick look at some old aerial photos of that part of KC, MO. The oldest I could get was 1959. It was an industrial area back then with what appears to be a number of small businesses along that stretch of 25th St. To me that would lend credence to the SUPT moniker.

I could not find the address in any KC business listing usually found in Google books.

One additional note: There is a MAJOR railroad (multiple tracks) that crosses 25th St in that area.

Are you sure about the 520 and the 25th?

Re: Does anybody know what this iron plate might be?

I was looking at the same thing, an industrial center. But not too far away there is a "Turner Animal Hospital" a "Turner Recreation Center" and a "Turner Board of Education". About 2 miles away from the address as the crows flies, pretty much due West.
Maybe Turner was a man of some importance... :dontknow:

Have fun unraveling it.
Probably a reserved parking space sign or a door sign.

It is sorta hard to tell .. but after studying it a little closer under a 5.5x photo loupe, in may well be a 920 instead of 520, but 25th is correct.

Re: Does anybody know what this iron plate might be?

I see there is a Turner Unified School District in KC.

Could PS stand for Public School? I've searched for a school Superintendent named Turner but had not luck.

I looked at the 900 block of 25th. More industrial area near the tracks.

Where did you find this plate?

I dug this plate from a defunct, grown over, old road bed in Albemarle County, Virginia.

Thought this is rather interesting .. Today, I was out in the same area where I found this plate checking out my new AT Pro and recovered this old railroad button. Now I am curious if the plate bearing Kansas City, MO, and this railroad button bearing Missouri ... Kansas &Texas might be somehow related.
