Hello all!

So this weekend, I finally reached my personal goal of 1000 coins for the season. This is my first year metal detecting. I started in April, but didn't get serious until late may, early June.

So, my question is how GOOD is 1000 coins? I read recently on this site that someone had reached 5000 coins.... so when I read that, I thought my 1000 coins was really quite meager.

What IS a good coin count for a year? What is your thought on that? I'm not looking for bragging rights or anything like that.. more of an idea of how successful my year was based on your experience, knowledge and finds.

Thanks for your input! It's been a GREAT year and I can't wait for next year!

are we talken clad or silver

You've got to keep in mind that some people have a lot more time to hunt than others. You might have a guy with 10,000 coins in a year (and no, that's not unbelievable), but goes out almost every day and finds numerous parks, etc.

1000 coins is great, especially since you started later in the year, and the year isn't quite over yet! Try not to compare your figures to the figures of others. As my good bud TreasureFiend says, "To each his own pace"!

Congratulations!

Joe

Compared to my count...that's awesome.

But I'm not a coin shooter. I've found maybe a hundred coins this year...mainly learning and using my DFX til I felt comfortable enough with it to take it by itself into the woods.

I'm more a relic hunter so i don't focus on coins...but every once i a while...I'll go out to a park just to kill time.

And i havent been out all that much due to health limitations.

I'm guessing 1000 coins is a respectable number...I've just never been that much into that part of detecting.

So what's your daily average...or hourly average? How much competition do you have in your area?

I think half the people in Pittsburgh have metal detectors....thats why I hit these old forgotten areas that only hard core research finds.

Actually...as I sit here thinking...it's the research...not the detecting, I like most. :coffee2:

I just try to prove out theories that there must be some traces of people from other times still left in the ground.

Depends on your area, and the type of hunter you are.

For me, 40 pre-1900 coins in a year is a great year. Won't get there this year--too many wheaties in my "old coin count." But I am happy that the oldies are coming up more than the clad does.

Some folks will feel that it's not the quantity but, the quality. Let's face it some folks just live in places that have a long history, (East coast) and thus the quality. Now the folks that live in the metropolitan areas will get the quantity. I think. Out here in the West we don't tend to have as many parks and fields, (not enough water)so we take whatever we get.

I would have to say that for me 1000 would be a fantastic number for a year. I definitely agree with JohnyCat about quantity vs. quality. I would rather find a dozen, okay even one quality piece over hundreds of pieces of clad. Unfortunately, since i haven't detected in over a decade, my return has been peppered with nothin but clad and being in California, sometimes I wonder if it's worth it. Of course it will be when I find something.
