I have found a button like coin which must of been gold plated as it has worn away a lot but it read from the top to the bottom, WARRANTED GILT STANDARD, does anyone know any information, dates for this item? thanks!

Looks like a shot shell casing. You need pics of back.

Definitely a button, but hard to give an exact age without the shank. My guess would be 1820's to 1840's or so.

gilt is like gold plating ----gilt was used on flat buttons of the 1770 to about 1830 era -- the wording is standard "quality puffing" wording common to buttons made in the early 1800 time frame -- england made a lot of the buttons used in America in the late 1700 early 1800 time frame -- America became more of a "button making" for is self country due to a shortage from the war of independence and the war of 1812 when they could not get buttons from england
