Pound this record setting dog tag a week ago Saturday. It was 25 years older than the previous oldest known dog tag for the city of Natchez Mississippi. It will be in the OK dog tag book in its next edition and also it will be in the November/December issue of American digger. I thought my US pewter war of 1812 era button would be my find of the day but the tag was a surprise.

Nice! Thanks for sharing...

Make sure you preserve that button, it will flake to dust, if not stabilized. Still its in pretty good shape for a pewter.

Thanks and I have preserved it. It was found in a creek bottom under several inches of silt. I figured that was part of the reason it was still in such good shape. I preserved it the following day before any flaking began to appear. That photo was from the day I found it. I used hair spray to seal it. I've also heard that a 50/50 mixture of Elmer's glue and water lightly painted on pewter buttons works well also.

And for any of you who may not know pre 1900 dogs tags can be worth much more than you would think! So don't just dismiss dog tags when ya find them. I've learned that they really start becoming collect 1940 and earlier. Thanks for looking!

super cool finds!

Collectors looking for the older ones all the time and willing to pay good coin to get them. Early numbers are highly desirable....like tag no. 1...and so on. Early dates with early number hard to find !!

Yours is a banner find to some collectors !!!

yes pretty darn cool

Thanks unfound I noticed after all the attention my tag got on Facebook that it really was a banner find to some. I was floored by the offers I got! I did for some reason make a deal with a guy from Oregon I think it was, I kinda wish I never made the deal, but I'm a man of my word and held true to my words and didn't back out.

Sweet pewter button, it even has the loop!

Steve

Nice digs. Love the dog tag.

Love the dog tag! My earliest is a 1912 York County, Pa Dog Tax tag.

Nice dig . The only tag I have found this year was a 1936 from here in ny
