Rectangular Grooved Rock I.D.

I posted this originally over in the "What Is It" Forum and someone suggested I try here. Hope someone can help. I don't have a clue whether its Native American or American Trash, but here's the original post.......

Hello everyone! New here and my first post. I was walking the creek over the weekend (upstate SC) trying to beat the heat and found this different looking “rock”. It feels like a rock hardness wise, and sounds like a rock when it’s rubbed or tapped. It looks like the stuff I know is rock that was all around it. It doesn’t attract a strong magnet. The rusty looking areas on the grooved side seem to be some sort of fabric, maybe, that are the remaining bits of whatever covered it. When looking at it through a loupe I can see little strands of fiber in those spots. On one of the long sides it has a hole with a “pin” inserted in it. Oh, and it doesn’t float in water. My best guess is it’s a piece of old junk that got washed down the little creek, but I hope it’s something more! Anyone have any ideas?

It looks metallic in your pictures so I'd say it's most likely a piece of old farm or logging equipment.

It may well be metallic, but it's a metal that doesn't respond to a magnet if it is. So there's no iron in it, at least according to the magnet. It looks like the rest of the rocks in the creek just from a color and texture standpoint. I appreciate your interest and reply!

Maybe a grill stone looks like it had a handle attached at one time .

It looks alot like cast iron, and some cast irons do have a weak magnetic attraction.

I know it looks like iron. I know those orange places look like rust. They’re not. It peels off and is very thin and pliable and is fibrous. I used a neodymium magnet and it has absolutely no attraction. I have rocks in my collection that have more iron in them than this thing, whatever it is. Here’s a close up of one of those rusty looking spots. See the fibers? It doesn’t break and crumble like rusty iron does.

And I found this up the creek a little ways from it. I know that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s Native, just saying it’s not out of the realm of possibilities.

That may be a piece of asbestos lining for a brake pad/shoe with the metal backing rusted away.
