Hello and thanks.

I posted this on the geology forum of treasurenet and the suggestion was made I post it here. I was trying to figure out what kind of rock this is. Found in a creek bed on a recent rock search. It was a unique rock, so I kept it.

Thanks for the help!

That looks like some of that stuff rock finds in Georgia. Could be flint or chert...maybe he will drop by in a bit and give his input. It definitely looks flaked off of and might be a core.

Well for some reason I cant enlarge it. It looks like flint but as peaches says it looks to be a core. I got many all different sizes. Nice find

rock I got it to enlarge and now the dark spots look like patina. Some of you folks might flinch at what I'm about to say but here goes lol I sometimes use Iron Out, found in the laundry section in the store, to get creek patina off of stuff and so far it hasn't hurt anything but I dilute it a lot. What I'm getting at is, OldScout, maybe see if you can clean it some more to see if the black comes off and see what's underneath.

Forgive me for asking...but what is a core. I was rock hunting and thought this to be an odd rock. :)

A few other angles. The "white" side is what I would call the bottom/underside. It looks much different than the brown side.

If you are saying this might be from something made by Indians...I have to tell you it's been 30 years since I have found anything made by Indians. A bit of a dry spell, if I may say so.

Yes a core is whats left over from removing pieces from it to make tools with. So if its a core it would be a artifact.
Here is a few I have found.
