Very cool relic!
I'm not an expert by any means, but you could focus some research towards Jesuit trade rings. When the early missionaries came to North America they would trade or give rings or trinkets to the natives to earn trust and open up communication with them. Some of their goods were simple cast rings that had religious motifs that aided in their hopes of conversion etc

Those are one find I hope to actually find myself; they seem to be associated with the earliest of French sites and trading posts, I hope you find some more finds of that period at your site!
