I've been lurking for the past month (read the last 200 pages of posts) and couldn't help but make an account when I found this. For the weekend I picked up $320 in nickels and $270 in half MWR. Skunked on the halves and other than ~60 pre 1960 nickels, this is the only keeper. I know not to clean coins, but is this an exception?

Thanks in advance!

Depending on if you already have one, like in your Jeff nickel book... If you don't have one, leave it as is, otherwise go ahead and clean it.

So, other than the ink, the coin is not in too bad of shape. How much is the ink going to lower the numismatic value?

Doesnt look like ink looks more so like smoke and fire damaged ...

After a little more research, I think you're right. This is the first one I've seen with fire damage so it hadn't even crossed my mind. Thanks for the help!

Not the prettiest example, but a great find, none the less! '50-d's are hard to come by in the wind. If it were me, I'd try acetone. Not a lot of monetary value in current condition, so it's not like you are gonna do any harm.
Congrats on a tough date!

Try one of the aboves. nic-a-date for the stubborn spots that whatever is on it damaged.

Nic-a-date won't do anything on this coin other than leave acid marks.

I had a buffalo nickle with the same kind of gunk on it. I used alcohol, q-tips, and there still was residual gunk below. The ironic thing was the date was visable the entire time I was doing this. Nic-a-date got some of the black gunk off. Sure, it might leave some acid marks but if it's just for looks or otherwise is worthless it's worth a try.

Agree with the acetone suggestion - with an window open. Use the pure stuff from hardware store not the nail polish grade. Might help and can't hurt. Nice find either way but so many of these were saved that they are actually harder to find in this condition than in uncirculated -
