I have what would seem to most of you a mundane use for a metal detector. Last year while cutting some hay with my discbine hay cutter I hit a large stone and knocked two "lifters" off of one of my "turtles". Lifters are trapezoid-shaped pieces of cast steel that weigh about 3 lbs. Since the turtles which hold the cutter knives spin at very high speed (5000+ rpm) these lifters were thrown out from under the machine into some long grass which due to the stones I couldn't cut. I searched by a good long time but was unsuccessful before giving up and purchasing replacements.
The replacement lifters cost $80 each so you can see that it would be worth recovering the lost pieces.
After asking my neighbors and acquaintances if they had or knew of someone with a metal detector I finally obtained a used Radio Shack 1000 which needed the battery terminal connectors repaired. Supposedly it works. I replaced the terminals and connected two new 9v batteries. When I switch it on, there is a short tone, the battery light flashes, and the meter momentarily deflects but otherwise it doesn't seem to respond when placed adjacent to larger metal objects no matter what position the two knobs are placed at. Neither the meter nor the tone responds.
I carefully removed the unit from the case and it looks Ok, no evidence of corrosion or broken wires, etc. I checked the sensor to box connector and it looks fine, wiggled all the wires and not response.
Since I don't have a manual I don't know actually how to operate it. Can someone briefly describe its operation & use?
Beyond that can anyone suggest what might be wrong and how to repair it?
