New to the group... not entirely green (Detected ALOT on-land in the 1980s with Compass and the original BH Red Baron - glorious days).

I know the most common tip will be: "Get a SandShark, buddy" (but I had a budget; could onlly afford a VLF this time). Taking my Cibola to the (Florida saltwater) beach for the first time (soon!) at dawn. From what I've read, I might have a chance (in Hades?) of it working OK on dry sand with the SENS and THRESH set low, and with DISCRIM set just below TAB. Any tips for the hunt would be welcomed from you guys. If you tell me to stick to the landlubbin', I won't blame you or feel offended.

ALSO: Should I ZIPLOCK the unit to protect from sand & wind? Any other info appreciated.

I posted this same message in the Tesoro board earlier today... Thanks.

Don't worry, your Tesoro will be fine in the dry sand. In the wet however or near the water it will be unstable. Depending on the amount of black sand mixed with the salt, you might get rid of some of it by running with low sensitivity. Your settings sound fine. Just make sure you can hear a thin gold ring laying on the sand and your set to go. Don't forget to pick up the ring and good luck!

The one time I outright recommend running the SENS and THRESH high is in the dry sand. Dont be afraid to max them out and lower them as needed so you are running stable.

Around the wet sand, you will have to tweak and fiddle to get any falsing to abate. You'll know this "salt falsing" when you go from the dry into the wet sand - your detetor will start to beep on things that dont seem to be there. Just turn down the SENS until it stops being a bother. Keep the THRESHas high as you can.

Re: Thanks for the tips

Thanks to both of you for your input on my (future) success (always the optimist).
Haven't made it to the beach, but am headed to a remote location this weekend that yielded some half-dozen Quarters & Halfs from the 1930s the last time I was there (site of an old fairgrounds in a small town). Thanks again to you both and may all your digs be treasures....

i use a cibola with the 3x18 coil on dry sand (my first year detecting) and have no problem with the sens set high. one problem i have had with the cibola is with any moisture getting into it - so i would go with the baggie over the control unit.
as for wet sand - it is not too good at that but can be adjusted to a place where it can be used - this is something you will have to play with to find what setting will work where you are at.
also, it is very important to find out how your discrimination works. i need to set my cibola with the 3x18 coil to minimum to pick up gold!
