How do you research a legend or treasure tale.
I’m looking for resources for maps of particular areas and or books etc.
The only thing I can think of is usgs maps of counties etc.
Any suggestions would help

Check with local libraries, both public and college ones. Check with local or state historical societies. Check local newspaper back issues. Visit old timers in retirement homes. Read local histories in books and magazines. Good luck.

It’s just a canyon in Northern Arizona with gold legends in it, like most.
I used to be able to go into map store to get info but there closed

I would agree with going to the library. Also, if you look it up and take a deep dive into what the internet says. That’s what I do to try and find potential jobs near me.

Library of congress has a collection of antique maps online.

That's where the guy got information to investigate the 1715 Fleet, from the library of congress, as the story goes.
