Revoluonary War item... any ideas?

Found this at a Revolutionary War encampment site on the Mohawk River... I believe it's brass... could be British or US militia... around 1777

A mount like that can only really go on leather or wood. No idea what it is for?

I found something like that once, even with a similar design. Not sure.

The most obivious thing that jumps to mine is a broken Belt Stiffener.
