Doesn't look right and one would expect a turret shank (birdcage)on a French button of the period

I agree/ I think it is re enactment. It is the wrong shank and the patina is not nearly white enough.

The 13th Bourbonnois Regiment where part of the French Army under Comte de Rochambeau.About 6000 French troops landed in Newport R.I. July 1780 they also took part in the battle of Yorktown after the battle they wintered in Williamsburg Va.then returned to New England,could have traveled through your town on the way .

You just can't get the anal reanactors anymore...
