A friend and I just recently moved to Richardson and are both getting into metal detecting. I was wondering if there was anyone in the area that could point us in the right direction and maybe show us some cool spots to go and do some diggin. Also, anyone who might know the legal stuff involved with MDing in this area, any information would be much appreciated!! We were thinkin about hittin some of the lakes that are close to this area and wanted to know what hoops we might need to jump through in order to do it legally. Thanks ;D

Richardson is part of the Dallas metroplex in Texas, sorry about that :tongue3:
No problem!

You should have MANY places to detect around there.

Good luck!

Try posting this in the Texas forum on T-net

Fortunately most of the public areas in the Dallas area are open for detecting, lakes, parks etc. However there are some that I could legally hunt but don't. City Lake Park in Mesquite is one of them. I went there once to detect and it was wall to wall parents and kids. I could see some of the parents were uneasy seeing me using my digger with a nasty looking blade so I left. The last thing I want is a few parents in front of the city council wanting us out of Parks or public lands off limits. I have never had a problem from police or officials and want to keep it that way. I have not been to Richardson to detect so you may want to check the local ordinances. We have a club in Mesquite you may want to check out,

I know a guy who lives over in Plano. He is on a different forum. Dont know if he haunts this one but will email him the link to this thread and see if he will come over and discuss things with you too.

Yep, that's me... PM me and I can give you a few good areas to look at. Generally things are pretty easy but there are a few hoops to jump through for certain things-even that stuff isn't a big deal!

Thanks for dropping by. I figured you would be able to point him to some decent areas there in Plano and the surrounding area. If he wants to head further south, I know the San Antonio area or should say, I used to...but my daughter lives down there and can update me on the city. Canyon Lake area to the north of San Antonio, there are lots of beaches and I used to hunt out there on occasion. Wasnt unusual to to find 40 to 50 coins per beach area every time I went. Never saw another detectorist any time I went either. So either I was just there at the wrong time or few folks hunt that area. Or did. Could be different now as that was about 7 or 8 years ago since I moved from there.

Texas is a great state for detecting. From what I have heard, the state park system has opened areas to detecting that were closed to us when I lived down there. The one thing that was always frustrating to me was not being able to detect on Padre Island along the national seashore stretches. But miles on miles on miles of beach is closed to detecting. You can go dig holes galore and bury you parents, and drive your vehicles on the beach, tearing a** and spinning tires, but heaven forbid you swing a coil and maybe find a piece of history to preserve. >:( Fortunately the state parks I believe no allow it there on the island and the county parks. I believe when I was down there, I could detect at the State Parks in the camping area and the picnic areas but could not down on the beach itself. I think that has changed, but maybe you can tell me about that. Oh, and we couldnt detect up in the dunes.

I always thought about trying to come up with a way to detect on the beach without it being noticable that I was detecting. :tongue3:. Oh, like concealing a coil in a shoe or something like that, but I couldnt figure out a way to actually detect without making it so dang obvious.... :icon_scratch: :laughing7: Not worth the trouble, for sure. Like the trouble of going to jail, etc, etc. But it still made it an interesting intellectual pursuit. ::)

Thanks for the responses guys, we are planning on doing some research on the area and finding some cool places to go. We are the 9-5 type Mon thru Fri so we have lots of time in the evenings and on the weekends to explore. I would still love to hear of any places that are know to be good areas to go and if we find any while we are out and about, i wll be sure and let any of you guys who are interested know about them. I would love to go out and do some hunting in San Antonio, we may be heading out that way in the near future so I will have to get more info from old_goldchaser before we head out. :laughing7:
