It will work with two...try it.
 

The cz20 operating voltage is 18 volts. So you need 2 nine volts in series to get 18 volts and that will work. They put a pair of nines in series (18 volts) in parallel with two more in series (18 volts) to get the life of four nine volt batteries putting out 18volts. When you gang cells in series, you multiply the voltage of the cell times the number of cells to get working voltage. When you gang batteries in parallel, the voltage stays the same but you have gained the extra battery life. If you put 12 aa cells in series you have 18 volts and you could run your cz20 on that too.

Because First Texas makes a better detector than Whites.
