The stone is believed to be Carnelian or sard which is usually harder and darker though thanks

I think what makes it look like a star is actually a reflection of a ceiling fan with lights on. The image cut in the stone is what is known as intaglio, and in this case 'reverse intaglio' meaning that the image is cut into the back of the stone for viewing from the front for a smoother look. usually, reverse intaglio cuts are painted. yours may at one time had some silver or gold paint of sorts to help bring out the image for better viewing. from what little I know about them, the roman or spartan soldier motif was very popular in the 1930's and 40's. I believe yours dates to that period.

I agree with the date but the stone is too dark for it to be seen from the front the only way it is visible is when a light is help behind it

don't think it is sard, all the sard I've seen has been orange. But could be carnelian, but I think it is what chug and red said, star sapphire.

the stone is reflecting the ceiling fan

now i see the fan, I did a image search and found a few similar in Carnelian, all dated in the 30s and 40s

all the ones ive seen have been ontop of the stone not under it and none have been this dark

sardonyx stone (sard) looks like a better match still looking

i thought it might be sard ty

Here's a couple pics with white paper under it,, under my kitchen light (the fan) as you can see you cant make any of the image out i still kinda like the secret society thought

Im woundering if the stone came loose at one time and who ever had it had it put back in upside down because they did not like the Image!!! ??? HH Chug
