When someone loses their ring in let's say waist deep water, will it remain in that spot and just keep getting deeper in the sand or will the waves and tide move it back and forth? I'm sure the weight of the ring matters but was just wondering.

Depends on so much...
Currents... water movements...
IF calm water... generally yes...

Ocean with mild to moderate waves and tidal changes... No.

It's all how it is shaped...and wave action. Strong enough waves can and will move gigantic rocks. There's not a lot of surface area for most gold items so they like to settle to the lowest point. Eventually like items settle in the same area.

Some rings behave like foil. Small wide but thin ones. They will sound off like foil as well.

most rings will sort of group near quarter or nickel lines. Sometimes that's not even the case. Lol hh Gl -Joe

Most people focus on the individual target moving when they should be thinking about the bottom moving and where the sorrounding sand ends up during that time.

Yes, sand moves, along with the targets in it. But there can be long periods of "calm", with no sand movement. D/t no swells, storms, on-shore winds, etc....

Also the heavier the items, the less it moves. I've seen conditions where the only items left at certain zones are fishing sinker type dense items (lead globs, etc...), d/t all the coins got washed off to another zone. And when we see that happen , we bear down hard where the fishing sinkers have settled out (or "been left"), because gold and lead have similar densities :)
