Ring or pipe fitting?

Found this today at an elementary school today. There is the number "5" on inner side.
It seams to have something like ceramic inlaid on the top.
Outer diameter is the size of a penny.

Its a ring. I've found several just like it. The 5 should be the ring size.

Looks like a "Mood Ring" the outer band would change colors by your mood.
