ring that says sterling but looks plated?

Sterling isn't a plating is it? I found this ring and it says sterling but appears to be plated? Do they do that? what do you think the stones would be?

yes it could be sterling. Some companies put a Rodium plating on the silver to retard tarnishing. Now figure this one out, I dug a ring that says inside the band " sterling foil " what a hoot.......NGE
