A lady had a ring for sale today on one of the local online yard sales. It seemed to be a great price and she advertised it at 14k. When I looked at it though it was marked 14kP. Is this a hallmark of some kind or does it mean the ring was plated as I feared? Passed on it because I wasn't sure!

karat plum --or -- karat (plated) --big difference ---- one means will test out to be at least 14 K (pure)--the other means well just plated...

ok, so how do I know what this p stood for?

Buy it and find out. If it is plum you got a steal. P usually means plum.

thanks

Magnet, test kit, look and feel of the ring. Gold, after looked at repeatedly for a few years, just has a certain look to it. Edges of the ring are usually rounded and not cut to a 90* angle.

Thanks Buzz

Not plated. Gold plated would be marked as. 14k gp or 14k gf for gold filled. The p stands for plumb which means it is exactly 14k. Older gold marked 14k without the p. Can vary down to 12k

The plumb mark was letting you know it is the exact karat labeled

Thanks Turbo. That's what I needed to know.
